The noises a failing balance makes

Windows tend to warn you before they fail outright.

A spiral balance losing tension often makes a light metallic scrape as the sash travels, or the sash begins to feel heavier on one side than the other. A cord about to part will sometimes creak against the pulley, and the sash may sit slightly crooked in the frame.

Neither is urgent the day you notice it. Both are worth telling me about, because knowing which noise you are hearing tells me what to bring.

What happens in the room while I work

Very little needs to move. I work from inside at the window, and I need enough clear floor to stand a sash on end while the cords are replaced. Curtains come down, blinds usually stay up.

Sash work makes dust, because old paint and grit sit in the pulley pockets and come out when the beading does. A drop sheet goes down before anything is opened, and I vacuum the pockets out rather than brushing the debris onto the floor.

When I leave, the room should look the way it did when I arrived apart from a window that works.

One window, or all of them?

If one cord has parted, the others in that window are the same age and have had the same wear. A double hung window runs on four of them. While the sash is already out of the frame, replacing all four is barely more work than replacing the one that snapped, and it saves you calling me back in a year for the next one.

Where windows are in different rooms and different conditions, I do what has actually failed and leave the rest alone. There is no need to do a whole house at once.

Cost depends on which mechanism has failed and how many windows are involved, so I quote after I have looked. Quotes are free, the price is fixed before I start, and the repair carries a ten year warranty.
