Freeing a window that has been shut for years

This is its own skill, separate from the cord work underneath it, and it is where most of these jobs begin.

Layers of paint bridge the gap between sash and frame until the two are effectively glued. The temptation is to force it, which splits the beading, tears the paint off the frame face, and occasionally cracks the glass. The alternative is patient: score the paint film along every seam, work the sash free in small movements, and accept that the first few millimetres take longer than the rest of the job.

Once the sash moves, the real diagnosis starts. Sometimes the cords survived and the window simply needs cleaning and rebalancing. More often the cords went first, which is why the window stopped being used and got painted over in the first place.

Timber and aluminium windows

The repair follows the mechanism rather than the age of the house.

Timber double hung windows run on cords, pulleys and counterweights hidden in the frame, and are restored as originals. Later timber and aluminium windows run on spiral balances, a sprung mechanism that loses tension or snaps, and those get replaced and re tensioned to the weight of the sash they carry.

Where a cord and weight system has genuinely reached the end, the frame can be converted to spiral balances without touching the sashes or changing how the window looks from the room.

What you should expect afterwards

A repaired double hung window slides with one hand and stops wherever you let go of it, top and bottom. It does not creep down on its own and it does not rattle in the wind. The beading looks like nobody removed it.

I also take the dust with me. Sash pockets hold decades of it, and clearing that out is part of the job rather than a favour.
